The people of Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State have fixed September 26, 2026 for the coronation of the 11th King Jaja of Opobo, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, vice chairman of the Opobo Council of Chiefs, Alabo Princewill Wogo- Dappa, stated that throne of King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most historic traditional institutions in the Niger Delta.
Wogo-Dappa said as part of preparations for this historic event, the Council has undertaken a number of important diplomatic and traditional visits, including visits to respected traditional and national leaders.
He stated that the coronation will showcase the rich heritage, traditional institutions, culture and history of Opobo, adding that it will also provide an opportunity for our people at home and in the diaspora to come together in unity around the throne and the future of the kingdom.
“We are here to formally announce the forthcoming coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom.
“The coronation activities will culminate in the grand coronation on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town. This is a significant moment in the history of Opobo Kingdom. The throne of King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most historic traditional institutions in the Niger Delta, with a legacy deeply associated with the courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership of King Jaja of Opobo.
“The coronation of Jeki VI marks the continuation of an enduring institution and the opening of a new chapter in the life of the Kingdom.
“As part of preparations for this historic event, the Opobo Council of Chiefs has undertaken a number of important diplomatic and traditional visits, including visits to respected traditional and national leaders.
“These engagements have helped to strengthen historic relationships and convey formal invitations to the coronation. Among those visited were respected Kings and traditional rulers as well as the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
“The coronation itself will showcase the rich heritage, traditional institutions, culture and history of Opobo. It will also provide an opportunity for our people at home and in the diaspora to come together in unity around the throne and the future of the Kingdom.
“We therefore invite the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join us in celebrating this historic occasion. We particularly appeal to the media to help tell the wider story of Opobo. It is a story of heritage, resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity.
“As we prepare to receive guests from within and outside Nigeria, we ask everyone to cooperate with the arrangements being put in place for security, traffic, protocol and general coordination,” Wogo-Dappa said.
