Ernest ELochukwu: The Easy Going Maritime Guru.

Date:

Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Chief Ernest Elochukwu, a Nigerian freight-forwarding executive and former president of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), built his career in the maritime sector through decades of industry experience and professional mentorship.

Elochukwu, who hails from Ichi in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, entered the freight-forwarding business in the 1980s after serving under the late Dr. Bartholomew Emecheta, a seasoned industry professional.

Elochukwu said the period marked a turning point in his life.

“Under him, I learned a lot about professionalism in doing anything you do,” Elochukwu said. “When I left in the mid to late 1980s to establish my firm, I was sufficiently prepared because I had learned the ropes.”

He later founded The NestElo Group of Companies, which has since become an established name in Nigeria’s freight-forwarding industry, servicing a wide range of clients.

Although he acknowledged there were areas of disagreement during his apprenticeship, Elochukwu said Emecheta’s mentorship played a critical role in shaping his career.

“He took mentoring seriously by doing the job and allowing those under him to learn how to do it well,” he said.

Elochukwu went on to serve as chairman of ANLCA at the old Port Harcourt seaport in the 1990s before becoming the association’s national president from 2004 to 2008. He currently sits on the association’s board of trustees.

Outside his professional career, Elochukwu is an active tennis player and a former captain of the tennis section of the Port Harcourt Club. He continues to play regularly, associates say.

Elochukwu is married and has children.
